2008 American Flag Rugby Festival Wrap-upAmerican Flag Rugby News and PressSeptember 26, 2008 For seven weeks each summer, more than 1,000 kids in Morris County assemble at parks and schools around the area to play a flag version of rugby. The season culminates with a flag festival held in Chester, NJ. In 2009, over 100 teams playing in over 150 games on 18 fields participated in the event. For rugby junkies and the casual fan, it is a sight to see. There were more changes and great growth for the youth rugby program in 2008. As is now expected, all programs grew again, bringing the total number of players in North Jersey to over 1,000. Joining the existing eight Morris County programs were Three Union County programs, a new program from Ridgewood, and a new team from Essex County. All these teams, along with a visiting team from Doylestown PA participated in the largest youth flag festival ever. On Saturday, September 26th, 2008, Morris Rugby hosted the 9th annual American Flag Rugby Festival in Chester. This years festival featured over 100 teams playing in over 150 games on 18 fields. Next year, we plan to put this event into the Guiness book of world records by hosting the largest flag rugby game ever. Leading the charge for the 2009 season is Morristown’s Patricia Titone, who has relieved Tom Feury of his ten year tenure as the president of Morris Youth Rugby. Tom will stay on as VP, Brian Jung will again assume the role of Secretary, Lill Rimac leads the laws committee, and Pam Laura will manage the referee pool.
